After more than 30 years of being a client, student and mentor in the coaching, healing, personal development and spirituality area. I came to a conclusion, years ago that may surprise many coaches and that is.

The most powerful coaching tool isn’t a model, framework, or questioning technique.

The greatest coaches are not the most expensive, and sometimes not the most experienced.

It’s often the awareness and self-awareness of the coach. The depth of wisdom and insight of the coach.

The Self-Aware Coach

Now, don’t get me wrong I do believe good coaching skills matter. Learning how to ask effective questions, facilitate change, and support clients through challenges is important.

The Self-Aware Coach - quote on coaching self awareness

But as a coach and mentor who has been buying from the coaching industry for over 30 years. A lot of things have dramatically changed including how loosely overused the word coach has become to describe so many things that are not really coaching.

How many become coaches in areas they have very little understanding or training in, when being coach in a specific area was something you did after you had a certain level of experience or training in that area.

So much so too many coaching programmes focus so heavily on what a coach does and far less on the coach. That too many coaches are coaching others from a lack of really understanding themself.

When the whole core foundation of coaching is supposed to be built on awareness, self-awareness, psychological safety and trust.

As coaches, we don’t simply deliver information or just ask questions. We become part of the process. Our presence, awareness, assumptions, beliefs, biases, emotional intelligence, and capacity to hold space all influence the coaching relationship.

This raises an important question: How deeply do we understand ourselves?

The Limits of Coaching Techniques

A coach can learn every model and framework available. They can master questioning techniques and follow a coaching structure perfectly.

But if they haven’t explored their own patterns, fears, triggers, conditioning, values, and blind spots, there may be limits to how deeply they can facilitate transformation in others.

Why?

Because we naturally see the world through our own lens.

The Self-Aware Coach And The Harmful Coach

The areas we avoid within ourselves are often the areas we struggle to explore with clients. That is why the self-aware coach is the most powerful, safe and effective coach. While the unaware coach can cause the client psychological and emotional harm.

That Is Why The Greatest Coach Is A Self-Aware Coach

A coach can only take a client as deep as they are willing to go themselves. Self-awareness is the foundation of the coaching process. That is why the self-aware coach becomes a powerful coach.

Why?

Because we naturally see the world through our own lens.

The areas we avoid within ourselves are often the areas we struggle to explore with clients.

The questions we are unwilling to ask ourselves are often the questions we hesitate to ask others.

The discomfort we cannot sit with within ourselves can become the discomfort we unconsciously steer clients away from.

The Coach as the Instrument

Many people view coaching as something we do. I view it as something we evolve with and into.

That is why coaches need to continually develop self-awareness, emotional maturity, and reflective practice. This doesn’t mean we need to be perfect or a carbon copy of anyone else, definitely not, you are here to be more of the higher version of you, not anyone else.

But being a Self-Aware Coach you must be willing to explore:

The deeper we understand ourselves, the more safely and effectively we can support others.

Beyond Goals and Outcomes

Many clients initially go for coaching because they want to achieve ;

A dream, a goal, a change, a result.

But beneath those dreams and goals, often lies something so much deeper.

A fear.
A belief.
A pattern.
A longing.
A question about identity, purpose, authenticity or even spiritual disconnection.

That is why a self-aware coach is better equipped to recognise these deeper layers and hold space for the exploration that may follow. A more consciously aware spiritual coach will help the client go far deeper.

Why Self-Awareness Matters

Self-awareness helps us:

  • Listen without projecting our own views or experiences
  • Recognise when our beliefs are influencing our guidance
  • Hold space for different perspectives
  • Facilitate deeper conversations
  • Build authentic relationships with clients
  • Support transformation rather than simply problem-solving

Most importantly, self-awareness allows us to coach from a place of authenticity rather than assumption.

The Journey Never Ends

One of the greatest gifts of coaching is that it continually invites us into our own growth. There is always another layer to explore. Another insight to uncover. Another opportunity to deepen our understanding of ourselves and others.

Perhaps that is the true role of the coach. Not to be the expert with all the answers.

But to be someone committed to ongoing self-discovery, growth, and conscious awareness.

Because ultimately, a coach can only take a client as deep as they are willing to go themselves.

“This belief forms one of the foundations of our Soul-Led Coach Training, where developing the coach is considered just as important as learning coaching skills.”
